An Energy-efficient Approximate Multiplier Using Unbiased Compressors

Approximate computing, which relaxes full precision to achieve a higher performance or lower energy consumption, is widely used in error-resilient systems and applications such as multimedia and image processing. Since multiplication is a fundamental operation for arithmetic of computers, approximate multipliers are getting more and more attentions. As far as we know, almost the existing approximate multipliers focused on designing a lower mean-error compressor. This paper proposed two approximate compressors which that generates positive sign errors and negative sign errors in balance to constitute an energy-efficient multiplier. Experiments evaluate the hardware attributes such as power, delay, area and the power delay product (PDP) of the multiplier and also evaluates the accuracy by applying the multiplier in image filtering application. The experimental results show that, compared with two existing approximate multipliers, the proposed approximate multiplier reduces 3% of timing delay and over 30% of chip area and improves over 34.8% of PDP. Meanwhile, the proposed approximate multiplier also achieves not less accuracy than the two existing approximate multipliers.
